Local govt officials must be neutral

Local authority chairpersons and chief executives must conduct themselves in a non-partisan manner because governments come and go, Mashonaland East Provincial Administrator Cuthbert Ndarukwa told a leaders’ meeting here last week.

“If you become overzealous and partisan at work you could compromise your future as leaders. You never know the political future of the country – so be warned,” he said.

Besides calling for professionalism among council decision-makers the meeting was also aimed at reviewing service delivery.

“It is my pleasure to disclose that Mashonaland East local authorities were rated as the best in the country by the Ministry of Local Government. We continue to give our best despite limited resources,” said Ndarukwa. He urged delegates not to be swayed away from council’s core business of service delivery by politics especially during the elections. “Elections will definitely be held this year but this should not disturb council business and service delivery in any way,” he said.

According to the new draft constitution, no employee of any local authority may, in the exercise of their functions for partisan purposes, prejudice or further the interests of any political party.
