Makepekepe have endured one of their most depressing pre-seasons in years and recently failed to pin down their transfer targets, amid reports their coffers are virtually empty. Matters came to a head last week when the club’s executive expelled seven senior players, following an ugly standoff over unpaid salaries.
Despite that, Msiska was still adamant that the team’s back-bone remained intact. “We are happy with the players we have at the moment and we are looking forward to the season. Those who have already dismissed us are in for a big surprise,” said the former club great.
“I have a side good enough to win the title. Yes, considering the strengths of the other big teams, I have no doubt that we are there among the title favourites.”
Just last week, the “Green Machine” off-loaded Washington Pakamisa, Tapiwa Khumbuyani, Asani Nhongo, Itai Chiwara, Nqobile Mpala, Luckson Kaisa and Shingi Kawondera. That development shook the green family to its core.
Makepekepe failed to bring in most of their high-profile targets, including three Zambians. The Twine Phiri-owned outfit also failed in their efforts to secure the Premiership’s rookie of the year, Kuda Mahachi and Quelaton’s Mhleli Sibanda, the latter joining FC Platinum instead.
Msiska told The Zimbabwean he already had a balanced side and was only looking to add one more striker to complement the duo of Leonard Fiyado and newboy, Dominic Chungwa, whom he described as “strong and hardworking.”
“We definitely need another striker, but I am happy with our strength in midfield and defence. Most of the players who have left were not even regulars. We have added three promising juniors to the midfield, where we already have Pride Tafirenyika, David Rediyoni, Hardlife Zvirekwi and Rahman Kutsanzira. It’s even better in defence because I have so many good players to choose from. People can say whatever they want, but we can’t wait for the season to begin so we can get down to business,” he said
United finished last season in 10th position, their 39 point haul putting them closer to bottom club Quelaton than title winners Dynamos. Their strike-force was the biggest let down with 28 goals in 30 matches.
