Makonese trying luck in Botswana?

Veteran Zimbabwean defender, Zvenyika Makonese, is now reportedly trying his luck in the less-fashionable world of Botswana football, after a failed bid to land a contract in South Africa’s Absa Premiership.

The tough central defender, who previously starred for Santos and Orlando Pirates in South Africa, was trying his luck with Botswana’s topflight outfit, Township Rollers.

This follows his failed bid to join Cape Town-based Chippa United, who are struggling in the SA league and recently hired former Warriors striker, Wilfred Mugeyi as their new coach.

Rollers coach, Darlington Dhodho, confirmed to The Zimbabwean early this week that the out-of-favour defender, gifted but at times wayward, was at the club last week, trying to join them.

“We are looking at Makonese as part of our bid to strengthen our team. He is an experienced player but his long absence from professional football has been our biggest concern, so we need some time to have a proper look at him,” said Dhodho, himself a Zimbabwean.

“We want to win the championship this season and would appreciate having an experienced defender like him in our camp. I would also like to give him a chance to prove that he is still a good player.”

Makonese also looked forward to joining the Gaborone-based side, adding that he still possessed energy to play.

“Dhodho is giving me an opportunity and I will not disappoint him. I am still a talented player with much to give to my fans and football in general. Should I get the chance, I will give it my all,” he said this week.

At the beginning of the current South African season, the former Shabanie Mine player failed at the last minute to secure a contract with Limpopo-based PSL side, Black Leopards because his papers were not in order.
