Masairi to be laid to rest tomorrow

The burial of a twelve year old Headlands boy, who died in an inferno on Saturday, is set for tomorrow in Dzikiti Village.

MDC-T President Morgan Tsvangirai is expected to attend the burial with several other MDC delegates.

Christpowers Simbarashe Maisiri, is alleged to have died after the hut he was sleeping in was set on fire by suspected Zanu (PF) members in Headlands last week.

His siblings, James ( 17), Munashe ( 15), Tinotenda (9) and Panashe survived the arson.

Masairi’s death has heightened fears that politically motivated violence may escalate ahead of elections set for this year.

Christpowers was a Grade 4 pupil at Ruura primary school.

According to a statement released by MDC-T, Christpowers was the son of Shepherd Maisiri, an MDC-T Headlands deputy organising secretary.

A post-mortem on the deceased was carried out at Parirenyatwa hospital but the results have not been released.

No arrests have been made despite suspects having been identified as Gilbert Makura, the Zanu (PF) district chairperson of Village 47, Isaac Dobo, Annah Mumbana, Zanu (PF) District Chairlady and Tendai Gosho.

The four are alleged to have strong links to Zanu (PF) Member of Parliament for Headlands, Didymus Mutasa and they have been fingered in nine politically-motivated violence incidences targeted against the Maisiri family since 2008.

“The MDC’s position on the escalation of violence is that it will not allow a repeat of the 2008 atrocities when over 500 members were murdered at the hands of the Zanu (PF) and State security.

“ The MDC remains steadfast in the march towards a new democratic dispensation, which recognizes and respects the rights of every Zimbabwean,” read the statement.

The 2008 election was marred with violence which led to the formation of Government of National Unity after the election results were dismissed as illegitimate.
