MDC-T claims jailed activists living in filthy conditions

Five MDC-T members incarcerated at the Chikurubi Maximum Prison are living under filthy conditions, the party has said. Of the five, the party says four are in solitary confinement.

The five activists are Last Maengahama, who is a member of the party’s National Executive, Glen View Councillor Tungamirai Madzokere, Simon Mapanzure, Yvonne Musarurwa and Rebecca Mafukeni.

They are part of the 31 MDC-T members who are facing charges of murdering a police officer, Petros Mutekedza in Glen View in May 2011.The MDC-T has since dismissed the charges as ‘trumped up’.

The other 26 activists were granted bail by the High Court last year.

“The MDC-T is seriously concerned by the unhygienic living conditions of five of its members who are in remand prison for over 20 months on false charges of murdering a police officer in Glen View, Harare in May 2011.

“Maengahama, Mapanzure, Musarurwa and Mafukeni are incarcerated in solitary confinement at the Chikurubi Maximum Security under appalling conditions,” said the party in a statement released on Thursday.

Added the statement: “This was revealed in court yesterday by the defense lawyers of the five who were applying for bail before High Court judge, Justice Chinembiri Bhunu. The State is opposing bail claiming the five are a flight risk.”
