Mighty Warriors ready for Uruguay

The national women’s soccer team should gain more international experience from its scheduled tour of Uruguay early next month. Assistant coach Johannes Chikaola said the Mighty Warriors, who have previously toured Germany, were set to play four games in a five-nation tournament set for March 4-10.

He said the tour would provide great preparation for future tournaments like the Cosafa and the Africa Cup qualifiers next year. “It is very important for us to know and adjust to the type of football played in various parts of the world. We have been to Germany before and travelling to Uruguay will widen our experience of the game,” he said.

The players have been inactive at club level, as the local league is off-season, but the assistant coach was happy with their level of fitness two weeks after the girls went to camp.

“Some of them have been very active, taking some football lessons and have proven to be fit. I have no doubt that the team will be prepared for the competition,” said Chikaola. The Mighty Warriors will leave on March 2, with Chikaola hopeful of good fortunes. “We know we are short, compared with most players from that part of the world, but we will make use of our strengths, like keeping possession. These girls have played together for some time now and can use that to their advantage.” The team will be without strikers Rudo Neshamba and Rufaro Machingura, but have equally experienced attackers like Rutendo Makore, Erina Jeke and Kuda Basopo.
