Mugabe has in past months been preaching peace ahead of the next elections to be held this year.
The memorial service was held on Saturday at the Makone homestead in Domboshava and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and several MDC-T officials were present.
In his thanksgiving speech, Ian Makone, who is an advisor to Tsvangirai, expressed gratitude to Mugabe for his beast donation.
“I would like to ask the Prime Minister to extend our deepest gratitude to President Robert Mugabe who donated one of the beasts that have been slaughtered for this memorial service. We are so grateful for the donation,” said Makone.
Speaking at the same function, Tsvangirai said Zimbabwe’s economic future hinged on the next elections, hence the need for the country to ensure the polls, scheduled for this year, to be held in a credible manner.
“What will distinguish whether the country goes forward or backwards is the way we are going to conduct the next election. We need to ensure the next elections are held in the most credible manner.
“Let’s desist from violence. We do not need to beat each other during election time. President Mugabe has said there should be no violence in the next election and I would like to add my voice to that. Let’s vote peacefully,” said Tsvangirai.
Nyarai Makone died in December last year after committing suicide at the family’s Domboshava home.
