He was 42.
Mugabe collapsed yesterday at his house and was pronounced dead at Claybank Private Hospital in Gweru around 12 noon, after complaining of stomach pains due to ulcers, a disease he has been fighting for a long time.
Mugabe worked with the Zimbabwe Christian Alliance for seven years and is one of the founder members of the Save Zimbabwe Campaign and participated in a number of peace campaigns, promoting democracy and human rights.
ZCA is a group of churches in the fight against human rights abuses.
Mugabe is well-known for completing a seven day dry fast together with human rights activists Kuni Naidoo, Nomboniso Gasa and others to highlight the plight faced by millions of Zimbabweans.
Mourners are gathered at House Number 3462 in Mkoba 16 and a church service was conducted for him on Friday at the Lundi Park Baptist Church.
Family spokesperson, Henry Mugabe, told The Zimbabwean that the body will today be taken to his rural home Chikarudzo Village in Masvingo.
“The body will lay in state at our home in Chikarudzo and burial is set for 10 am tomorrow,” he said.
He is survived by his wife, Jane, and three children (two boys and a girl).
“We have lost a promoter of democracy and human rights activist par excellence. It is unfortunate that he died when Zimbabwe is almost crossing the bridge towards peace and democracy,” said Reverend Useni Sibanda of the Zimbabwe Christian Alliance.
Clifford Hlatshawayo, the MDC-T national youth spokesperson, said:
“His passing on is a great loss for the democratic movement. He prayed for youths who are victims of political repression and as youths, we cherish his work. We grieve together with his family”.
