Peace teams bridge political divides

The Roman Catholic Church is spearheading a four-day Conflict Management and Peace Building Course throughout the country - targeting the youth leadership of all political parties in the GNU.

In an exclusive interview, Silveira House Programmes Officer and Coordinator of the Peace Building short course, Felix Tembo, said the move was aimed at promoting tolerance, trust and national unity in a highly polarised political environment.

“It is pleasing to note the positive results the programme is achieving as the youths come here divided according to their parties but end up mingling and sharing together, regardless of political affiliation,” he said.

The programme was initiated by Father Fidelis Mukonori who leads the Chishawasha Catholic Community.

“This followed dialogue between the Church and the parties in the GNU. It was noted that youths were being manipulated by politicians and blindly used in violence activities.

“We are currently training 53 Mash East youths who hold various leadership positions in the three main political parties, together with six Youth Liaison

Officers of the Joint Monitoring and Implementation Committee,” Tembo said.
