Responding to questions raised by the parliamentary portfolio on education last week, Chigwabha said government resources were stretched, so the onus was on schools to distribute books and utilise school funds to replace them where necessary.
“School authorities should help protect the books from vandalism and theft as the government is not in a position to assist,” said Chigwabha. Rural schools are particularly affected by book shortages, with classes of up to 50 students sharing three books per subject.
