My daughter recently finished her Advanced levels and scored nine points, which was way below our expectations. She has always passed with 15 points in every exam she took during her two year period. We wanted her to study Law with our local university. They won’t take her for that programme with nine points. We are thinking she should repeat her final exam again. We want what is best for our daughter, please advise. – Mr & Mrs D.
Dear Mr & Mrs D
I want to congratulate your daughter for passing her exams, something I hope you have done. Nine points is a pass in Advanced Level I believe. It is unfortunate your daughter slipped up from what you expected but you need to stop talking about her as someone who failed
I advise you to give her a chance to follow her own dreams. Right now I have a feeling that you have designed a pathway for her to follow your dream for her to become a lawyer. Is that what she wants? Does she not have another career path of her choice knowing that with her points Law will not be possible at local institutions?
Sit down with your daughter and discuss with her the many options there are for her. Let her chose what she wants. Repeating A Level may be the solution – or it may waste precious time she will later regret. You need to discuss this as a family, and also with her teachers and those who know her abilities. – Aunty Lisa
