Silver Fox on a mission

Wilfred Mugeyi has vowed to save ABSA Premiership club Chippa United from looming relegation. Weaned off his assistant coach job at Ajax Cape Town two weeks ago, Mugeyi has had a bittersweet arrival at the Cape Town-based club so far – losing one and drawing the other of the two league games he has been in charge of.

The former prolific scorer told The Zimbabwean recently that he was a man on a mission at his new club, following years of working as the second best man at Ajax.

“I have been in the country for many years now, so for me to be given such a task is a great privilege. I now understand the type of football being played here and will definitely do my best at the club,” said the “Silver Fox”.

“Chippa United has a bright future, with great youngsters who have already shown me that they have a winning mentality in them. I have also beefed-up the squad with experienced players like former Bafana Bafana captain, Mbulelo Mabizela, Rudiger Gilbert and Masibusane Zongo to make great our escape. I am very happy to be working in such a good environment as this, where there is unity and great vision from management.”

Mugeyi has also re-united with familiar faces at the club. “I worked with some of the players I have here, like Brent Carelse and Mfundo Shumana, at Ajax, so it is more of a cut and paste job for me. They are top class stars who do not even need an extra push to do well.”
