Youth Agenda to launch "Board Election Train" campaign

The Youth Agenda Trust will this Saturday launch the “Board the Election Train” campaign that involves conducting road shows in Epworth in a bid to inform the youth about their right to participate in national elections, the organisation has announced.

YAT seeks to create a platform for dialogue and debate on governance issues amongst youths.

In a statement, Youth Agenda said the road shows will be held at Rueben, Overspill and Solani shopping centres in the dormitory town located on the eastern periphery of Harare.

“We expect youths to turn out in large numbers and participate as superstars’ urban grooves outfit Extra Large will headline the road shows which also include local poets and drama groups,” said YAT.

The artists are set to present artistic pieces that encourage young people to register to vote and participate in both the forthcoming referendum and general elections that will be held later in the year.

“The road shows will also be used as platforms to promote peace in the Epworth community which was devastated by political violence (during the 2008 presidential re-run),” added YAT.

Youths constitute 65 percent of the population but of the two million votes cast in 2008 less than 20 percent participated, according to official reports, and they used by senior politicians as perpetrators of violence.

YAT last year embarked on a civic education programme aimed at training first time voters in six of the country’s 10 provinces on their rights to vote in the elections.
