Police no longer provide food for detained suspects and inmates rely on food brought by visiting relatives and friends. ZACRO Chief Executive, Edison Chihota, told The Zimbabwean that his organisation was engaging the government, for permission to provide food for suspects held at police holding cells while waiting to appear at magistrate courts or pending further investigations. “We have been negotiating with the government for ZACRO to assist with feeding of inmates at police holding cells but nothing has materialized so far. It seems the engagement process will take some time due to government suspicion of NGO programmes,” he said. The Co-Home Affairs Ministers, Theresa Makone and Kembo Mohadi, could not be reached for comment.

ZACRO to feed detainees
Food shortages in police holding cells will be a thing of the past if the government authorises the Zimbabwe Association for Crime Prevention and Rehabilitation of the Offender to provide for the detainees.
