ZEC invites referendum observers

Zimbabwe’s electoral body has called for applications for accreditation from individuals as well as local and foreign observer organisations who wish to monitor next month’s constitutional referendum. The referendum has been set for 16 March.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission said all applications should be sent to the Chief Elections Officer, Lovemore Sekeramayi, and will be vetted by the Commission’s Observer Accreditation Committee.

The committee will then recommend to ZEC to accredit aspiring observers would have been passed.

“An application for accreditation as an observer must be made to the Chief Elections Officer by (a) the individual or eminent person who wishes to be accredited or (b) the organisation that wishes its representatives to be accredited or (c) the Minister responsible for Justice and Legal Affairs or the Minister responsible for Foreign Affairs, in respect of individuals whom the Minister concerned has invited to observe the referendum,” ZEC said in its election notice on Sunday.

ZEC has said it has printed 12 million ballots for the referendum which would have 9,000 polling stations. Zanu (PF) and the MDC’s have urged Zimbabweans to endorse the draft constitution.

After the referendum, the country will head for elections whose date has not yet been announced. Reports however indicate that the elections will be held in July.

Zanu (PF) and the MDC’s have clashed on who will be allowed to observe the oncoming elections, with the former being against foreign teams outside SADC and the AU.
