The ground-breaking mixtape titled “World Hip-Hop Women: From The Sound Up” carries 21 tracks and was released on January 21. Black Bird joins other female lyricists from America, Canada, Chile, Cuba, Egypt, Iran, Korea, Mexico, Morocco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Palestine Singapore, South Africa, Spain, United Kingdom and Zambia. Her track “H-Town Hustler” is number 14 on the mixtape.

Black Bird is excited about her involvement in the project, which is set to beef up her music image in the international arena.

“When World Hip Hop Women was finally released on 21 January, I was blown away! The quality of emcee-ship from the women in different parts of the world is amazing and I’m at a loss as to why these women aren’t given the kind of media hype that they deserve,” she said.

“But the highlight of being on the World Hip-Hop Women mixtape is definitely the fact that Jean Grae (American rapper of the Kill Screen fame) is on the first track. I am so honoured to have been part of a project with a legendary femcee (female emcee) like Jean Grae. I have always looked up to her, together with MC Lyte, Da Brat, Queen Latifah and other female emcees from the 90’s,” she said.

She said it was high time women were regarded as a great constituency in the hip hop industry, rather than just as sex symbols. The project was put together by American female disc jockey DJ La Jedi from Detroit.
