Zim karate kid on the rise

At 11 years of age, Sandile Mncube gives a lot of promise as Zimbabwe’s next karate star.

The Bulawayo-born youngster, who only launched his career in the sport last here year, has fast risen into one of the best students at Takalani Dojo Academy.

Already looking forward to representing his home country at international level, Mncube has scooped five medals in various South African regional competitions. Should Zimbabwe move slowly, this amazing talent could soon be lost to South Africa, where his talent has already been noticed.

“I always asked my mother to enrol me in a karate club and I was happy when she did that last year. I have participated in five major tournaments and come out tops in all of them. I have so far won a Yellow Belt from Funakoshi Shotokan Karate Association, Orange Belt from The Africa International Bushido Freestyle Karate Do and Mixed Martial Arts and an Excelling Trophy in Techniques. I also received double certificates for being the best karate student at the academy,” said Mncube.

His dream lives on. “I am aiming at a black belt in the next three years and I am just five steps away from achieving that. I also want to represent my country in various international junior tournaments,” added the Crown Mine Primary School student.

His mother, Patricia Ntombeka, shares her son’s joy. “I am impressed by his instant success and now I know why he always cried when I initially refused to enrol him for the sport. Now he has made me a proud mother – I will support him all the way because he is disciplined and committed,” she said.
