ZPS backtracks on recruitment strategy

The Zimbabwe Prison Service at the weekend reversed his decision to conduct a recruitment exercise via Provincial Governors’ offices following a public outcry when the strategy was leaked to the media. Provincial Governors are all members of Zanu (PF).

Last week ZPS head office dispatched 600 recruitment forms to the 10 provincial offices. This meant that anyone wanting to apply would have to go through the Governor’s office to get an enrolment form.

A highly placed source at ZPS head office told The Zimbabwean on Monday that endless meetings were held at the weekend aimed at reversing the development.

“Deputy Commissioner Huggins Machingauta held an overnight meeting with the human resources heads including Officer Commanding Mashonaland Region, Assistant Commissioner Masimba Wonder Chisora. It was agreed that the responsibility be now given to stations Officers-in-Charge,” said the source.

“Machingauta was on a witch-hunt – asking for the masterminds of the initial development. As I speak enrolment forms are being taken to individual stations. Under the new arrangement officers-in-charge will accept application letters from relatives of staff first before opening to the public.”

The sources said heads would roll at ZPS Head office after the scandal was exposed.

“An investigation team was set up at the meeting and tasked to look into the matter, which they said has once again tarnished the image of the organization. It is strongly believed that some hardliners who joined the organization from the Army are behind the idea of recruiting green bombers, with the aim of influencing them to vote for President Robert Mugabe in the elections, “the sources added.

Efforts to get a comment from the ZPS spokesperson, Superintendent Elizabeth Banda, were fruitless.

The ZPS Commissioner, retired Major General Paradzai Zimondi, declared in the run up to the discredited June 2008 Presidential Runoff election that he would “go farming if Tsvangirai was declared victorious”.
