The wrangle between the housing scheme and its beneficiaries has spilled into the courts as they demand stands or a return of their monthly subscriptions.
The brainchild of the late Chenjerai Hunzvi was formed in the late 1990s. The company’s directors are accused of embezzling the money. According to papers filed at the Masvingo magistrates court, former provincial chairman, Isaiah Muzenda, and one Getrude Gutsa have been cited as some of the respondents.
The beneficiaries were promised stands in Masvingo urban last year. Several efforts to get the stands or to get their money back failed. It is alleged that directors were withdrawing various amounts from the housing scheme bank account and converting it to their own use.
Several housing co-operatives have sprouted in Masvingo as the local authority has failed to provide decent accommodation. Scores of people, mainly Zanu (PF) supporters, last year invaded Victoria ranch in the outskirts of the city and started dishing out residential stands amongst themselves.
Council later regularized the housing project after signing a memorandum of understanding with the Masvingo rural district council under which the ranch falls.
