Youth who took part in the Play Your Vote Sports Tournament held in the Musvovi area over the weekend, said that they are eagerly waiting for this historic poll which they said will make them feel as equal Zimbabweans after their parents endured 3 decades of segregation under the Lancaster House Constitution.
The youth welcomed the resounding vote in favour of a new constitution as it will provide them the platform to exercise their democratic rights like other ordinary Zimbabweans.
Under the new constitution, people are regarded as Zimbabwean citizens by birth, descent or registration.
Section 35 of the constitution says, “All Zimbabwean citizens are equally entitled to the rights, privileges and benefits of citizenship and are equally subject to the duties and obligations of citizenship”.
“We have been waiting for this day for too long. All my grandparents died before their dreams could see the light of the day. We are happy that at long last we will be able to do that very soon,” said Tendai Marara of Renco Mine whose population is mostly made up of aliens.
Youth Agenda Trust Senior Programmes Officer Trust Nhubu urged all youth in the area to ensure that they all have national registration documents so that they are able to register to vote before the elections.
Aliens, who make up a significant number of the urban, farming and mining population, are expected to make a significant impact in this year’s make or break elections which will close the curtain on the turbulent Inclusive Government.
Despite having contributed immensely to the development of the country through providing labour for the mining and farming industry, Aliens continued to be left out of important national processes and dawn of a new constitutional era is expected to bring relief to many.
