Amidu is the tournament’s leading scorer with four goals, after he single-handedly provided Lidoda Duvha a 4-3 victory over Cape Town All Stars in the first round of the competition.
“I want to emulate my countryman, Nyasha Mushekwi, who finished as the Player of the Tournament last season,” said Amidu. “That accolade should be won by a Zimbabwean to open the doors for other players from my country into the local Premiership.”
Leopards go into a very difficult last 16 tie against Platinum Stars, third in the league and enjoying one of their best spells in the Absa Premiership in a very long time, as Nedbank Cup action resumes this weekend.
With his side third from bottom in the 16-team log, Amidu said saving them from the drop was one of his key priorities. He remains the side’s second-best scorer with four league goals, two behind Rodney Ramagalela.
“I attribute my current goal scoring form to the extra training sessions I hold on my own. I always aim to improve. The relegation battle will not be easy, as every threatened team fights to survive, but I will give it my best to ensure my team avoids the drop,” Amidu said.
The 22-year-old has put a difficult spell at Kaizer Chiefs behind him, after he was shipped to Leopards just before the current season without featuring in a single official match for Chiefs, despite carrying a lot of promise when he signed.
