Best of the Best: Edmore Sibanda

Tapuwa Kapini and Bruce Grobbelaar will go down the history books as two of the most eccentric former Highlanders goalkeepers, but none will deny that the ultra-playful Edmore “MaMkhwebu” Sibanda is very far behind that duo. He played for the Bulawayo giants between 1999 and 2004. He shares his best moments:

My Best Team

None other than Highlanders, who dominated Zimbabwean football and were a menace to other local clubs. At Bosso, we played an entertaining game that made us a marvel to watch. Bosso’s history goes back a long way and a winning mentality has always lived in that club.

My Best Stadium

That has to be the National Sports Stadium, where I enjoyed my best moments. The crowd was always cheerful and given a chance, I would go back and play there, even as a veteran because that memory will always live on.

My Best Player

Thulani Ncube, former Highlanders defender and captain, who had great leadership qualities and was the best reader of the game. Biya played good football and was a great talent and solid as a rock.

My most Difficult Opponents

There were two – Caps United’s Joe Mugabe and Wankie’s Joseph Mwanza. Those players were skillful and prolific scorers. They gave me nightmares on the eve of each game against them.

My Best Ever ZimGoalkeeper

Former Amazulu goalkeeper, Muzondiwa Mugadza; he was quality and his ball distribution and handling was out of this world. His big body was an advantage against other goalkeepers.

My Best Zim Player

Former Highlanders and Coventry City winger, Peter Ndlovu, because he had great skill, speed accuracy and discipline.

My Best Coach

Former national team coach, Rahman Gumbo, a good coach who always believed in his players during his time at Bosso.
