Black-owned farms invaded

Suspected Zanu (PF) youths have invaded three farms measuring about 3 500 hectares that were parcelled out to local farmers in 2000. The three farms located at 21 West Gweru Block, 49 Wildbeest Block and Dobton Farm, are on the list of land compulsorily grabbed from former white commercial farmers.

Joseph Shoko, the provincial Lands Officer confirmed the development and said his department had called on the police to disperse the invaders. Sources who spoke to The Zimbabwean said the latest invasions demonstrated disgruntlement among loyal Zanu (PF) activists who have waited in vain to be given land.

“As you know, there are thousands of party supporters who were left out of the 2000 land reform programme and have been on a waiting list. These are the people initiating the fresh invasions,” said the source.

Another source said the invaders had backing from top party officials who wanted the issue of land to be revisited.

“What is being done at the affected farms has no blessing of either the government or the Lands ministry,” said Shoko. “The invaders should immediately vacate those pieces of land.”
