In a statement ahead of the celebrations, Tsvangirai said the draft constitution promoted an increase in the participation and representation of women in public bodies such as Parliament.
IWD will be commemorated under the theme "The Gender Agenda: Gaining Momentum”.
“It is my sincere hope that the best way the women of Zimbabwe can celebrate International Women’s Day is by endorsing the draft constitution next Saturday. Considering where we have come from in our collective and tenacious fight for democracy, the draft constitution is a giant step forward.
“Let us shame those with the penchant of trampling on people’s rights by endorsing the many freedoms and rights of women that are now enshrined in the supreme charter of Zimbabwe,” said Tsvangirai.
He added: “One of the most important commissions to be established under the new Constitution is the Gender Commission whose core responsibilities include monitoring gender equality and investigating violations. This Commission is again a revolution in the lives of the women of Zimbabwe.”
He commended women for their resilience, patience and hard work in the fight against political and domestic violence.
