Masvingo mayor Alderman Femias Chakabuda has written a letter to finance minister Tendai Biti requesting the payment of the accumulating debt.
Although some government institutions, such as Masvingo provincial hospital, owe the local authority money, the ministry of defence has failed to pay a single cent.
“Failure by the government to settle its debt is negatively affecting service delivery,” added Chakabuda.
Chakabuda said while the local authority had ways of recovering debts from defaulters, it could not disconnect services to the military barracks.
Biti confirmed receiving a formal complaint from the city council and promised to attend to the issue. “I am definitely going to do something about it,” said Biti.
Masvingo city council needs about $50 million dollars to complete its water argumentation programme. Residents of the country’s oldest city are subjected to intermittent water cuts, which are partly due to power cuts and unreliable water pipes.
