In a statement, Tsvangirai described the referendum as a crucial phase in Zimbabwe’s democratisation process.
“I want to say for the onset that this is an important process that will push this country forward and we must come out in our large numbers to express our position on the charter,” said Tsvangirai.
“Let us all go out in large numbers and Vote Yes to set a good foundation for a new Zimbabwe with a new set of values that respect human dignity and that will poise our beloved country for democracy, growth and development,” he added.
He said there was need to respect the new constitution when passed, adding that the proposed draft would revive Zimbabwean fortunes.
“The new charter gives us an opportunity to start afresh as a nation and to be given a new era of respecting the supremacy of the constitution.
“We need to be sincere and stubborn in defending the many rights and progressive provisions enshrined in this new charter, including the basic freedoms of speech, assembly and association,” he added.
Tsvangirai, who is the founding Chairperson of the National Constitutional Assembly, hailed the proposed new law for recognising the role of women in society and for respecting the rights and freedoms of Zimbabwean citizens.
