President Robert Mugabe his wife Grace and seven service chiefs and ZANU(PF) secretary for administration Didymus Mutasa are the ten remaining on the sanctions list.
Zimbabwe Defence Industries and Zimbabwe Mining Development are the two entities relating to President Robert Mugabe’s former administration also remaining on the sanctions list.
Deputy EU ambassador to Zimbabwe Carl Skau told reporters in Harare Monday that the ten remain on the embargo because of their critical role in the administration of the country.
“Those ten remaining on the list are key decision makers, and we look to for ensuring a peaceful credible and transparent election.”
EU insists that it would wholesomely lift sanctions on Mugabe and his allies if the country holds an untested poll.
Simon Khaya Moyo is President Robert Mugabe’s party chairperson who through a telephone interview with TheZimbabwean rubbished EU’s decision to suspend sanctions in installments.
“We say it means nothing. The sanctions are illegal and they must be lifted unconditionally. I am saying they are illegal”, said Khaya Moyo
Ernest Mudzengi an independent political commentator believes the service chiefs are justified to remain on the sanctions list because of the role they played in 2008 during the run up to the condemned Presidential run off election.
“You will agree with me that one of the issues topical on the reform agenda is the issue of security sector realignment, with most stakeholders agreeing that the securo-crats should be removed from politics”,Mudzengi stressed.
The EU imposed sanctions on ZANU(PF) administration in 2002 on allegations of flawed owing presidential elections ,human and property rights violations.
That was after Mugabe had embarked on a controversial land reform program which drove away hundreds former white commercial farmers from their land without compensation.
