The government froze the recruitment of nurses from nursing training institutions about three years, citing financial challenges. The embargo adversely affected hospitals.
Mpilo Central Hospital chief executive officer, Laurence Mantiziba, confirmed the development.
“Yes it’s true that the government has given us the go ahead to recruit more nurses. We have recruited 37 new nurses and we will be conducting more interviews soon,” said Mantiziba.
Mantiziba welcomed the recruitment, which he said would greatly improve health delivery.
“We have been operating with a serious shortage of nurses,” he said. Each province has been given a quota of nurses it can hire.
