Madhuku advocates anarchy: Mangwana

Claims by the National Constitutional Assembly chairperson Lovemore Madhuku that Copac’s draft constitution is not people-driven and therefore should by rejected at the referendum may lead to anarchy, says Zanu (PF)’s COPAC co-chairperson, Munyaradzi Paul Mangwana.

His statements were made on the side-lines of a media and civic society workshop organised by Copac this week and accompany Madhuku’s nationwide campaign to canvass for a “No Vote” for the document which will be tabled at a referendum on March 16.

Mangwana said the international trends showed that there was nowhere in the world where a constitution was written by all the people. “Even the United States of America constitution, which is considered the best in the world, was written by five people. Zimbabweans simply need to endorse the constitution because it is the best we can do. Madhuku is merely advocating anarchy,” said Mangwana.

The three parties in the inclusive government are in support of the draft document. MDC-T Secretary General Tendai Biti also told journalists at a media conference in Pretoria, South Africa over the weekend that the new constitution will mark a turning point in the country’s history if endorsed at the referendum. Biti said the new constitution would be a panacea for free and fair elections expected in July.
