The National Gallery has finally removed the old newspapers that had been covering the controversial artwork that is at the centre of a pending court case.

The newspaper was, however, replaced with black fabric.

The old newspapers were used by the gallery officials to conceal the controversial work of visual artist, Owen Maseko, when he was arrested almost three years ago.

Maseko’s work focused on the Gukurahundi atrocities.

“I think they tried to decorate the affected space simply to mislead the public that there is nothing inside anymore,” Maseko said. “No one will ever hide what transpired during the Gukurahundi atrocities. No weapon or amount of force will muzzle me.”
