MDC-T activists' murder case postponed

The case in which the defense counsel for the 29 MDC-T activists accused of murdering a police officer, Petros Mutedza in May

2011 is seeking for discharge of the case has been postponed to 2 April.

The postponement of the case came after the defense counsel were not furnished with a record of the previous court proceedings that is supposed to be used when High Court Judge, Justice Chinembiri Bhunu presides over the case.

The defense counsel, led by Gift Mtisi indicated its attention to apply for discharge at the close of the State case on 12 March and applied for a postponement of the case to 25 March to allow them time to prepare their submissions.

The last State witness in the case was Cuban pathologist, Alveiro Aguero who conducted the post mortem on Mutedza.

Aguero did not link Mutedza's death to the MDC-T activists.

He said the deceased died as a result of assault after a hard object was used against him.

He testified that Mutedza sustained a deformed skull due to force from a hard object, which he said was inconsistent with falling onto a tarmac road as averred in previous court accounts.

Five of the 29 accused activists were denied bail by the High Court on the grounds that they were a flight risk.

Of the five, the party said, four are in solitary confinement.

The five activists are Last Maengahama, who is a member of the party's National Executive, Glen View Councillor Tungamirai Madzokere, Simon Mapanzure, Yvonne Musarurwa and Rebecca Mafukeni.

MDC-T has since dismissed the charges against the activists as "trumped up".
