MDC-T riled by arrests of its members, civil society officers

The Movement for Democratic Change led by Morgan Tsvangirai is concerned with a police crackdown on its members during constitutional referendum polling on Saturday In a statement on Sunday, MDC-T said: “Despite the relative peaceful environment during voting on Saturday, the MDC is concerned by an increase in the arrests of its members and civic society officials by the police on the referendum day.”

The party said four of its members were arrested and detained at Mahombekombe police station in Kariba, Mashonaland West province.

It named them as Nomatter Makwasha, Vincent Mpofu, William Zvavahera and George Masendu, with the first three being released in the morning on Sunday while the fourth member remained in police cells.

They are reportedly supposed to appear in court on Monday and details of the charges being preferred against them were not availed.

In Harare, Makario Chinongwa, the Zimbabwe Human Rights Association Assistant Advocacy Officer and Tariro Mhende, Director Okay Machisa’s personal assistant, were arrested for allegedly taking pictures at a polling station at Eastridge Primary School, said MDC-T.

“The two were taken to the Law and Order section at Harare Central Police Station. Chinongwa was detained while Mhende was released after she was forced to pay an admission of guilt fine,” read the statement.

In Glen View, the party said, Chipo Zuze from the Election Resource Centre was arrested and detained for allegedly asking to see the election results at a polling station while in Masvingo’s Rujeko suburb, one Tapiwa Renias Winslow met the same fate for alleged disorderly conduct in public while voting.

MDC-T says he was assaulted in police detention and is still in custody.

Crispen Masenda, an MDC supporter, was also taken in by the police in Masvingo for reportedly pasting campaign posters while in Shamva, in Mashonaland central, Christopher Chirigise, was reportedly arrested by Shamva officers for wearing a “Vote Yes” T-Shirt inside his shirt.

Early on Sunday, human rights lawyers, Beatrice Mtetwa and Thabani Mpofu were also arrested, while two senior officials from Prime Minister Morgan Tvangirai’s office, Felix Matsinde and Anna Mazvidziwa were also arrested and are still detained at the Harare Central Police Station.

Mpofu also works in the PM’s Office.
