FEARLESS Beatrice Mtetwa and the Rule of Law documentary film project

Produced and directed by Lorie Conway, a Peabody award-winning American filmmaker, the film opens with Mtetwa saying, “People who do things under the cover of darkness are afraid of light, so if you come at midnight I will be there with my headlights glaring.”

The film traces how Mtetwa has stood up to one of the “continent’s most brutal dictators, Robert Mugabe” and how “in spite of beatings by police, Beatrice has courageously defended in court those jailed by the Mugabe government, who include peace activists, journalists, opposition candidates, farmers’ and ordinary citizens.”

A post by Conway on the trailer says, “Through interviews with Mtetwa, several of her defendants, experts in the rule of law, the film will give voice to those who have been victims of the regime and provide an inside view on what it takes to fight back against the brutal and corrupt government. We hope that the film will spark dialogue and change in the country and throughout Africa, while also bringing the story of this inspiring woman to attention of the rest of the world.”

Mtetwa began her legal career in 1981 and has won several awards in recognition of her defence of human rights. Zimbabwean filmmaker Hopewell Chin’ono and journalist Andrew Meldrum, who worked in the country for 23, years co-produced the documentary.
