Mugabe votes “yes” in Harare's Highfields

Mugabe votes “yes” in Harare's Highfields Thabani Dube Harare President Robert Mugabe has cast his vote at Mhofu Primary School in Highfields.

“I voted ‘yes’,” he said, immediately after voting around noon.

He was in the company of senior Zanu (PF) officials and took off in his motorcade immediately after polling.

At the time he voted, there were about 50 people in the queue.

Addressing journalists just after casting his vote, Mugabe urged Zimbabweans to “jealously guard our hard won independence”.

“We are a sovereign nation and voting is a democratic right for everyone and we must guard it jealously against those who want to benefit from what does not belong to them,” he said.

He seemed to be referring to western countries that he has over the last two decades accused of meddling in Zimbabwean affairs.

Mugabe urged people to vote in peace, adding that he would continue voting in Highfields as it was his home area where he began the struggle for independence in the 1960s to 1970s.

Mugabe’s modest house in the low-income suburb was recently turned into a township tourism attraction.
