No position yet on observers: Minister

Government has not yet made a decision about election observers for the next polls, contrary to statements made by Vice President Joice Mujuru that those from Western countries will be banned, says Priscilla Misihairambwi-Mushonga, the Regional Integration and International Cooperation Minister.

“What do they (Zanu (PF)) want to hide?” she asked in a recent interview with The Zimbabwean.

“The government we have today is different from the one we had since 1980 where one party would decide on such issues as election observers and monitors. Now there is a tripartite forum for that and as we speak, the issue has not been discussed in Cabinet let alone by negotiators to the Global Political Agreement or SADC, the guarantor,” she added.

“I am one of the three leaders of the Joint Monitoring and Implementation Committee but we have not yet talked about election observers. When the time comes we will do so. Our leaders should guard against misleading the nation for cheap political gain,” warned the minister.
