MDC-T National Organiser Nelson Chamisa conveyed the request to Tsvangirai on behalf of party supporters at a Referendum meeting at Sunningdale Community Hall this week.

“I am advised by residents here that, like everywhere else, suspected MDC supporters are denied the opportunity to register as voters by partisan staff at the Registrar General’s offices. May you please engage your fellow principals on this issue,” Chamisa asked Tsvangirai.

“If nothing is done to rectify the situation the playing field will not be level at the elections. It is like Zanu (PF) is denying MDC access to the syllabus for a coming examination subject. We will get there but fail to participate,” he added.

He said discriminatory voter registration was one of the few weapons at Zanu (PF)’s disposal to rig elections and urges people to vote at the referendum as a Yes Vote “would be the dawn of a new government, new life and new president.”

There are widespread reports from across the country that suspected MDC followers especially the youths are denied the right to register as voters. According to the MDC, Zanu (PF) supporters are not subjected to the complicated vetting process and are turned away on flimsy reasons such as lack of proper proof of residence.

In rural areas, partisan traditional leadership is accused of denying MDC members proof of residence to deny them the right to vote at elections scheduled for later this year.

The Prime Minister is this week addressing residents on the constitution at several venues such as Harare City Hall, Mabvuku Hall and Nehanda Hall in Marondera.
