Public wants play on peace

Members of the public want to see a theatre production titled “Cat and Rat” take to the stage again in order to educate the masses on the need to shun political violence.

The Mutare-Haarlem Education, Arts and Culture sector spearheaded the play last year in April before it was performed in Dangamvura, Sakubva, Chikanga and Hobhouse High Density suburbs.

Priscilla Mandeya of Sakubva said: “The play highlights the dangers of indulging in violence and encourages us to refrain from politically motivated violence.”

Edwin Murowa of Chikanga said the play would prepare people for a peaceful election.

Stewart Chari a student said, “People need to be educated about the dangers of indulging in any forms of violence.”

The play depicts the gravity of polarisation and violence that has also infiltrated the church. It features two church leaders, Pastor Razor and Apostle Bhemba, who are fighting one another to gain control of a larger congregation.

Mutare-Haarlem Education, Arts and Culture sector coordinator, Keaven Smomondo, said the play was crafted with the forthcoming elections in mind.

“The message we intend to put across is to try and create peace and at the same time build our communities as we approach elections,” he said.
