Residents of the country’s oldest town have expressed concern over the discharge of raw sewage which poses a serious health risk.
“This issue is beyond our control. As long as there are power cuts, we have no option but to discharge raw sewage into the rivers,” said Masvingo mayor Alderman Femias Chakabuda.
The mayor dispelled fears that it was a health hazard. “Our water is the best in the country,” said the mayor. “The little raw sewage we are pouring into the rivers is too insignificant to cause diseases.”
However, the effects of the sewage can already be seen in the increase of water hyacinth parts of Lake Mutirikwi which is threatening aquatic life.
