Flouting an earlier arrangement that locals should be given priority in getting both residential and business stands in the district.
According to council minutes Rushwaya wants to construct a supermarket, service station and food outlet complex at the business centre located along the Masvingo Bulawayo highway.
Residents argue that the council had flouted an earlier arrangement that locals should be given priority in the allocation of residential and business stands in the district.
“We want to know the circumstances surrounding the allocation of the stand in question since some of us also wanted to develop businesses at the centre,” said Tariro Mutumba a Chivi resident.
“If we do not get a good and satisfactory response from the council we have no option but to seek audience with local government rural and urban development minister Ignatius Chombo over the issue. We declare zero tolerance on corruption – that is how our area can develop,” said Mutumba.
The council has defended the move arguing that it was all done above board and Rushwaya’s stand was for a big project that locals could not afford, and which would promote investment in the impoverished district. – Regerai Tukutuku
