SADC reins in Zanu (PF): Misihairambwi-Mushonga

The unexpected shift from a hard-line stance by Zanu (PF) to calls for peaceful elections is an example of how the Southern African Development Committee has pinned President Robert Mugabe down, says MDC Secretary General Priscilla Misihairambwi-Mushonga.

She was speaking to The Zimbabwean on the side-lines of a meeting held in the city to brief journalists on the political landscape of the country ahead of the forthcoming polls.

In the run up to the 2008 polls, Zanu (PF) was responsible for the deaths of 200 MDC-T supporters and the displacement of thousands more, according to human rights groups. However, Mugabe has been taking every opportunity to preach peace ahead of the next polls.

“It is not by coincidence or choice that he is making the statements. That was a firm position made by SADC. Mugabe has realised this time he cannot go it alone. In the meetings we attend together, there have even been insinuations of isolating him if he repeats the 2008 debacle,” said Misihairambwi-Mushonga.

She also reiterated that Zimbabweans should take confidence that their vote will be protected, from the commitment being made by SADC.

“This time around it’s a completely different situation. The people’s vote will rule supreme.” However, her remarks come at a time when there have been reports of widespread violence in the countryside orchestrated by Zanu (PF). “I understand MDC-T has informed the regional bloc on those disturbances and I can assure you they will be dealt with effectively,” she emphasised.
