Villagers threaten to vote “no”

As the country prepares for a constitutional referendum on Saturday, villagers in the Charumbira communal lands have joined hands with the Lovemore Madhuku-led National Constitutional Assembly, to vote against the draft.

The villagers, who are supporters of both Zanu (PF) and the MDC-T, said they had not read the document. A spokesman, Stephen Madhuro, said the villagers had held a series of meetings in the area where it was agreed to vote against the draft document.

“The reason is very clear and straight forward. Despite the fact that we are supporters of both Zanu (PF) and the MDC, we feel we should have been given at least a copy of the draft to read,” he said.

Another villager, John Munongi, castigated principals in the Inclusive Government for taking people for granted.

“The politicians are treating us like objects. We are human beings who should be given the right to make informed decisions,” he said.

Nearly all of the political parties in the country have endorsed the COPAC draft document and have urged their supporters to vote “yes”.

However, concerns have been raised over the availability of the draft document in all the languages spoken in the country.
