This gives them a chance to be the first ever Zimbabwean women footballers to break into the lucrative European topflight league, which has remained out of reach for most of the country’s male players.
Their destination is a sister team to the trail-blazing Bayern Munich men’s team, which has won the European Champions League four times and has qualified for the quarter finals of this year’s edition of the tournament.
Zimbabwe Women’s Soccer League chairperson Mavis Gumbo, who is also a member of the Zifa board, described the development as a show of appreciation for the high standard of local women’s football. Very few players from other African countries have received such invitations.
Gumbo hoped that more and more local players would get such opportunities to boost the national team’s international exposure and experience for international assignments.
The players were identified when the Mighty Warriors travelled to Germany for a training programme in preparation for their 2012 Africa Women’s championship qualifier against Nigeria.
The trials are said to have been facilitated by German-born men’s national team coach, Klause Dieter Pagels, who spent two years on attachment with the Zimbabwe women’s soccer team.
