Since its re-launch in 2009, Zapu has been dogged by factionalism, infighting, mass suspensions and the controversial axing of members, all of which have been blamed on the dictatorial tendencies of party leader, Dumiso Dabengwa.
Joli, who left his post as the party’s secretary for external affairs for the same reasons two years ago, has accused Dabengwa’s leadership of working against the values and norms of the party.
“The disease of Zimbabwean politics is cronyism. Those who do not have any independent usefulness start to demonize anyone with the ability to influence the future of the party, accusing them of trying to take over the presidency,” said Joli.
The party’s SA spokesman, Busani Bhalagwe tried to downplay the allegations.
“Those are unfounded allegations that are not informed by the party’s policies and practises,” said Bhalagwe.
