Zifa battles to recover donated goods

The cash-strapped Zimbabwe Football Association said it was battling to recover goods donated by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe under the Bacossi programme.

Zifa president Cuthbert Dube claimed the association had lost out on a massive donation that included mini-buses, small vehicles and generators, alleging these had been taken by members of the Warriors Trust tasked with seeking resources for the Warriors. The trust no longer exists. The Zifa boss said although they had managed to recover three of the mini-buses from then Zifa Chief Executive Officer, Henrietta Rushwaya, who headed the trust’s secretariat, two of them were not usable.

Zifa Vice President Ndumiso Gumede told The Zimbabwean they had “been everywhere” including to the police and the Anti-Corruption Unit, trying to retrieve the donations. He said also missing were two Isuzu double cab vehicles, at one time used as company vehicles by then Zifa president Wellington Nyatanga and then Warriors coach Sunday Chidzambga.

The donations were made by the RBZ during the Bacossi period, in which the central bank handed out food and made donations to approved companies or associations in need of assistance. Mini-bus donations were given to various institutions including hospitals, where they are now used to ferry workers to and from work.

Zifa has been confined to hiring buses for national teams when in camp. The Warriors Trust, which was headed by Harare businessman, Tendai Savanhu, was responsible for raising funds for the senior national team.

Savanhu maintained that their brief was not to acquire property, but to raise funds for the Warriors and added that if any donations were made outside the funds they received, he was not aware of that. He referred further questions to Rushwaya, who could not be reached.

The Warriors Trust has now been replaced by the Zimbabwe Football Trust, headed by retired colonel Tshinga Dube.
