ZIFA to get SAFA buses

The Zimbabwe Football Association is set to benefit from the gesture of goodwill by Fifa 2010 World Cup hosts, South Africa.

The South African Football Association, eager to dispose the luxury buses that were used to transport teams during the historic tournament, will soon donate some of the 24 vehicles to affiliates of the Council of Southern African Football Associations, says a senior Safa official.

This follows plans by the football association to salvage something out of the buses, described as White Elephants because Safa had no more use for most of them. It had been previously reported that some of the vehicles would be sold.

“Some will be given out to the Cosafa member associations as part of Safa’s commitment to the growth of the game in the region,” said a Safa spokesman. A date when the buses, which are gathering dust at Safa House in Johannesburg, would be given out, could not be ascertained. The idea was first mooted during a Cosafa general assembly held in Harare in 2011.
