Zimbabwe government gazettes referendum results

Government today gazetted recent referendum results which came up with a resounding Yes vote in favor of the Draft Constitution ahead of coming elections.

The gazetting was a mere follow-up to results published by the media following announcement of the referendum outcome by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission last week.

Today's gazetting will be followed by a Draft Constitution extraordinary gazette coming Thursday.

Constitutional Affairs minister Eric Matinenga told The Zimbabwean in a telephone interview that the extraordinary Draft Constitution gazette was supposed to be by Friday 29 March 2013.

"The extraordinary Draft Constitution gazetting will be done Thursday 28 March 2013 since Friday will be a public holiday," said Matinenga.

The Bill will be presented before parliament 30 days after the date of the extraordinary gazette. If adopted by the lower House of parliament it will be sent before the Senate for approval.

If approved by Senate it will be brought to the attention of President Robert Mugabe to be signed into law.

The Bill is expected to sail through since political parties in the GNU with representation in parliament agreed to support the proposed supreme law of the country.

Chief Elections Officer Lovemore Sekeramayi announced that 3 079 966 people voted "Yes" while 179 489 voted against the Draft.

With the new Constitution in place and outstanding reforms attended to, Zimbabwe is expected to hold harmonized elections later this year.

Life of the current parliament expires 29 June 2013 mid night according to the current Constitution and elections should be conducted within the next 90 days after dissolution of parliament.
