This initiation of supporting students in institutions of higher learning was triggered by ZIMRA’s Charity Fund which was established in 2001.
Speaking at the official handover of the scholarships held at the University of Zimbabwe, ZIMRA commissioner general, Mr Gershem Pasi said granting students with scholarships was a way of giving back to the community and a contribution towards the education of the nation.
“Our humble contribution towards educating the nation is inspired by Mother Theresa who said……It’s not how much we give but how much love we put in giving…” said Mr Pasi
The scholarships seek to assist students from less privileged families and those that are having difficulties in paying their tuitions.
“As ZIMRA we will continue to be driven by real altruism and genuine care for the needy university students in particular and all less fortunate members of society in general”, Pasi said
“The students we are assisting today are the very people that we will need in future to run businesses, head companies and make a positive impact in the economic development of our nation, in short, they are the future tax collectors or compliant taxpayers….. ”.
Some of the beneficiaries of the scholarship include Magada Thomas Tapiwa, Tanaka Michell, Siliya Ruth and Runesu Pardon who are forth year students in different faculties. The scholarship package for the ten students is valued at over thirty nine thousand four hundred and forty five dollars (US$39,445.00) for seven semesters at five hundred and thirty five dollars (US$5,635.00) per semester.
Mimosa Mine and Mbada Diamonds contributed US$20 000 each towards the needs of the less privileged.
