At least 40 local and regional artists are expected to descend on Masina Tavern, Luveve, for the Bulawayo Comes Alive music festival, which returns on May 24, after a six-year absence.

Executive director, Jeys Marabini, told The Zimbabwean that the first ever event in 2007 attracted more than 5 000 people when it was held in Mpopoma’s Pata Pata Tavern.

The Bulawayo Comes Alive Festival gives local musicians a platform on which to showcase their talents, while also affording local music lovers a chance to watch their favourite musicians under one roof.

“This festival is based on the premise that there is a lack of exposure for up and coming artistes and there are few opportunities for the established ones to widen their market base,” said Marabini, one of the country’s most celebrated jazz musicians. “This festival is one of its kind in Zimbabwe, as it brings different musicians to the same stage. We are expecting a huge audience.”

Marabini said the show took a break for six years due to the economic conditions in the country.

“The first event was a success because the venue was within walking distance of a large residential area. This year’s venue is also within walking distance of people’s homes and it’s even bigger. We also intend to bring an artist from South Africa to spice up this year’s festival.”

He added that the show was reasonably priced to ensure affordability for music lovers across the board.

“The fare at the last gig had a huge bearing on the number of people who attended the festival and we hope to keep it at a level that the majority can afford,” said the musician.

“ Admission at this year’s show has been pegged at $10 for the night. The event will feature some of the city’s top artists like Tholakele, Sandra Ndebele, Willis Watafi and Ndolwane Super Sounds. Part of the proceeds will go towards the establishment of a music school.
