Chiwenga champions Mugabe’s cause

As security sector reforms continue to be a bone of contention in the inclusive government, army commander Constantine Chiwenga last week toured Masvingo, meeting senior army personnel and ordering them to campaign for President Robert Mugabe’s re-election.

Chiwenga toured Chiredzi, Mwenezi, Chivi, and Zaka and pledged to give former freedom fighters more land if they campaigned for Zanu (PF)’s victory in the forthcoming polls.

War veteran spokesman, Kid Muzenda, said they had held a series of meetings with the army chief.

“The main issue of the meetings were to make sure our party and president wins the next elections and as war veterans the army chief told us not fold our hands but to campaign vigorously for the party,” said Muzenda. “He promised to reward us with more land if we perform the given task.”

Another war veteran, Albert Zivanai, said he welcomed Chiwenga’s call.

“We cannot just sit while the enemy snatches our country away,” said Zivanai.

Chiwenga confirmed that he was touring Masvingo but refused to give more details.

Chiwenga’s meetings come at a time when the two MDC formations are calling for security sector reforms before the elections. The MDC formations argue that the country’s security sector supports Mugabe and his Zanu (PF) party.

Defence minister Emmerson Munangagwa recently said security sector reforms were not part of the Global Political Agreement. However, the MDC -T last week claimed that minister Munangagwa was misleading the nation.

The MDC said Article 13 of the GPA states that all government institutions should be apolitical during the discharge of their duties.
