Local Government Minister Ignatius Chombo has issued an order for a local property company to use council land for a residential stands scheme.

The minister made the statement while addressing Zanu (PF) members who had gathered for the commissioning of a water booster at Hertfordshire, 10km from the city centre.

Chombo gave the property company, Mahlaba Housing Cooperative, a deadline of two weeks to inform him of the land they wish to use. “I know there is a problem of residential stands in this city. I will simply write a letter to the council making the request for the land for you,” said Chombo. The minister blamed supporters for not having drummed up enough votes in 2008 to avoid the inclusive government.

“In 2008 you made a great mistake but I know in 2013 that will be corrected,” said Chombo.

Mayor Teddious Chimombe said he did not know where the land requested by Chombo would come from, saying all available land was earmarked for projects.

“We have no excess land that is why our backlog for residential stands is at 17 000,” said Chimombe.
